Diaries, 1861-1865.

Winfield traveled from Staunton, Va., on March 25, 1861 and recorded his journey through Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Kentucky. He described the large numbers of men enlisting in the Confederate Army; the strong secessionist sentiments expressed by those he encountered on his journey; and his boat trip on the Mississippi river. In his last entry at the end of April 1861, he wrote of receiving news of Virginia's secession. The back pages of the second volume contain supply lists, schedules, and muster rolls of troops. Some of the lists of names include dates of death and descriptions of injuries. Although only one is identified as such, it is likely that the records are those of the Brock's Gap Rifles of Virginia's 7th Cavalry, as Winfield was Captain of this division.
